now that Elena's return is confirmed. The show was always about Elena and didn't work at all without her.

That is obviously an erroneous statement. They had the quips about the charcter, but acknowledged that it wouldn't even be a show without her, and they were very much correct.

It was more than just quips. People were constantly complaining about the character everywhere they could. Saying that she was always the damsel in distress, that she was boring, etc. If the numbers are increasing is because the end is nigh.

Completely agree. Elena couldn't last forever, the character sucked. Way too sanctimonious

shareI can only speak for myself, I never hated or even disliked Elena. Social media not unlike polls are not always the most accurate way of gauging public opinion.
I believe that you did see a lot of Elena haters on IMBD but we weren't all posting on the board for the entirety of the show.
I can attest to the fact that Delena fans were not welcomed or wanted by many posters when I started reading posts here.
For some this unwelcome and sometimes disdainful reception was enough to turn people away, not wanting to bother with the negative response.

Not in my opinion. Katherine may be more popular, by that I guess you mean liked, on IMBD, but not everyone agrees with the popular opinion of IMBD. As I said before, others were discouraged to voice their opinions.
Also, Elena became unllikable/ hated by many on IMBD when she chose Damon over Stefan.
As far as Klaus goes, he was an effective and multifaceted antagonist/ villain. But this thread is not about him or Katherine.

I'm talking about over social media, critics, and the Internet as a whole. Damon and Katherine are probably the most popular male and female characters by far.
Bonnie is the most popular character on these boards. It's like a no contest lol.
Elena is definitley not a more popular character than Klaus either. Probably not even Stefan at this point.
People hated on Elena tough in S2 when she was being a martyr. People didn't like that she was the center piece in The Originals S3 storyline either. They wanted more of the triangle I guess.
Caroline and Bonnie are up there with Elenas general popularity at this point. She was arguably the best written character in Seasons 1-3, even 4 although that's where character started flipping. 5 and parts of 6 though... In fact I'd argue she was the most hated character on the show after S5s finale. She got ridiculed by killing herself for Damon terribly.
I think Caroline is the most universally liked character
shareYes some people hated her, myself included, but the truth is something is missing without her. She was the glue that held the show together and up until season 4 she was the show's moral center, it was kinda hard to make it work without her.
