Far-Fetched (SPOILERS)

OK, so we as the audience are supposed to believe that Jesse's first
time rollin' over and spankin' Veronica, he creampied her and neither
of them, for some reason, remembered to buy the morning after pill? How
polluted were they that night? Is this movie some kind of period piece?
Does this take place in the 1950s? In what kind of world do you get a
girl pregnant during a one night stand rebound, never call her back,
and then run into her in a bookstore while you're with your ex-wife and
she not only seems absolutely fine but also extremely into you? Sorry,
but that whole plot-line seems a little far-fetched to me. Always the
laziest way to shake up a romantic drama plot line is throw an unborn
baby in the mix. Other than that I enjoyed the movie though.

reply

haha you think there are no babies conceived accidentally? think again.
also, the morning after pill is not an aspirin, it's a potent hormonal slam on your ovaries, it can really mess you up theoretically, even make you infertile.

reply

also veronica's character (vegan, spiritual...) did not seem like a morning after pill person to me...

reply

the morning after pill is a contraceptive-- no less vegan than the regular pill.

reply

Except not. It's an emergency contraception method.

reply

wrong.

reply

The morning after pill will not do that, unless you abuse it.

If I sound condescending, and I imagine I will, I beg your forgiveness, but what world are you living in? What is farfetched about a couple's one night stand resulting in offspring? Also, this is a movie, a story, a contrived narrative that's part of a controlled environment. Apart from that, there's nothing that isn't true to life in this film.

I didn't think it was farfetched that he got Veronica pregnant, but I did find it kind of farfetched that even though we are led to believe he still has feelings for his ex, he jumps right into wanting to marry Veronica and raise the baby together. Like he couldn't be a dad to the baby without marrying her? The storyline felt forced once it was announce he was going to be with Veronica and "try to make things work".

reply

To me the scene where he mentions that Veronica is from Belgium and his rush to finalize the divorce implied that part of his motivation for marriage was to keep her and their child in the U.S. so he can participate in raising the kid. It's never clear if he's honestly in love with Veronica (though he hesitantly says yes at the end), but even with doubts, if she were deported, it would become nearly impossible for them to co-parent, as a romantic couple or otherwise.

Also, since casual divorce is apparently a viable option in Jesse's mind, he might not be so worried whether he and Veronica could find themselves in the same position later on and say, what the hell, let's give it a go too.

it is pretty common actually, I have a couple friends recently one a woman and one a guy who had one night stands and find themselves going to be parents.

I guess the poster has not had many one night stands? Usually safe sex is not the highest thing on peoples mind.

Myself recently had a one night stand I had no condoms and she uttered something like I don't think I am ovulating and we got down to business LOL

Smart? not at all. I could totally be in his shoes.

Women don't always tell the guy right away or not at all.

If she had not run into him in the book store. She may have went back to Belgium and that would have been it.

Plus really this is just a movie.

Yikes. Personally speaking, I don't care how drunk I am, I would never have sex without protection because I don't want kids to ruin my life. You're right though, it happens all the time. And I judge those people pretty hard without feeling one bit sorry for them to be honest, because hey, they could have avoided it.

You heart me? What is that? Is that like I love you for pussies?

I'd be more concerned about the plethora of STIs I could be contracting. But hey ho, everyone has different priorities...

1) You only take that pill if you think you might be pregnant. Or maybe VERONICA never takes it because she doesn't believe in abortion. Also, birth control pills and condoms aren't 100% effective.
2) Maybe VERONICA was O.K. with him in the bookstore because she was looking for a one-night stand too?

reply

The morning after pill isn't an abortion. Do you know how/what insemination, fertilisation or abortion works/is?
