He obviously had a weird fetish. It seemed like everything was going good and then he ruined it. You can't just spring that on a girl right away. Unless that is his fetish. Real persons do sometimes act in baffling ways. I think Rashida Jones and Will McCormack are both talented and they wrote an interesting, believable script for this movie.

In the DVD Rashida after the movie lets the viewers know that the character Celeste is just a exaggerated version of her own life. And all those horrible dates shown in the movie are those she had personally experienced. Including the one who decides to pleasure himself in the middle of the action.
I also learnt from a friend of mine once that her first boyfriend also loved pleasuring himself while in action and as he was older and had more experienced, he told her that this is something that all guys do, otherwise it's difficult to get an erection. Mt friend who was 16 then, so she believed him and put up with it.
