Why?

It is a great concept and unevenly but ultimately well executed show but they had to trash and destroy it in the last 5 minutes for the sake of a cheap twist.
There were easily 3 seasons at least to explore this further and, I believe, it could have been a very well-timed show. We live in an age when many an ideology turned into basically secular religions. Imagine modern people facing real and undeniable miracles?
I am not talking about "seeing the light" or "religious propaganda". But we live in a world where people use technology to construct realities around them. And here comes Jodie to burst their bubbles.
This could have been a great show is wisely made.
