Why do they keep referring to Mattie as ugly?
Are they unaware of Haillee Steinfeld's beauty? She's really quite a looker?

While that is true, in the book she is portrayed as being plain. Much like the adult Mattie is in this movie.
shareWatch her in 10,000 Saints.
He killed sixteen Czechoslovakians. Guy was an interior decorator.
Its Hollywood all ugly female characters are played by attractive actresses. Usually they just put dorky glasses on them
shareNot all guys have the same preferences. I don't think she's anything special
shareIt was the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century. Teen girls like Mattie were beautiful and marriage material, but by the time they were 40, they looked like old hags. Unfortunately her sharp tongue kept her from ever having a man, but it was just as well for her. In those days she'd be headstrong or independent, but today she'd be a lesbian.
shareHeadstrong and independent doesn't make someone lesbian you ignorant *ss
shareThe character was written as ugly, but obviously the producers weren't going to cast an actually ugly girl in the role, as they would damage her self esteem.
shareIndeed. There would be many adult actors that actually market themselves as ugly or odd looking, but that's a bit much to expect of a child actor. Can you imagine their parent/agent pulling that?
shareOf course Steinfeld is a very attractive girl. They wanted to stay true to the original text, and they didn't want to cast a dog as the lead female character, so they just forced that bit of dissonance on us. Didn't detract from the movie IMO, as I rate it as one of my favorite films of all time.
And in a couple of weeks, I don't know where I am going to be able to go to talk about it :(
