$$$ + good idea
Seriously. As far as a ratio of irritation to money making, the original Transformers movies are probably the front runners... especially "Dark Of The Moon (dumb title by the by) which made Worldwide: $1,123,794,079*. I mean that is incredible. Thus I understand the need to milk the living excrement out of this franchise (at least from a financial stand point). But it still baffles me that it made so much money. I guess in a time when going to movies is too expensive to enjoy them very often people want to get mindless entertainment rather than run the risk of viewing something that may suck because it is trying to be highbrow or arty or whatever other objection people may have with the more "cerebral" movies. I get that on some level. However, I absolutely love movies and wish there was another option. For example, a small local movie theater showing lesser known, qualities movies at a much a more reasonable cost. Not like an art house movie theater (still expensive), but a movie theater that can screen films from anytime period as long as they are seen as thought provoking (a loose generalization I KNOW!).
Now you ask:
Who decides what movies get shown?
That's where it could get fun. You could signup to be on the committee if you attended any films there and place suggestions into hopper and then they have a vote for people who COME IN AND PAY in order to decide what movie will be shown next.
Hell maybe even a subscription with monthly dues like a club. Before everyone starts calling me an idiot and linking me to Netflix or similar sites, you are missing the point. Going to the movies should be an experience. Big screen, Good surround sound, and high quality picture. The equipment would obviously have to be of a lesser quality than that which you would get in a major movie chain but still a theater setting. I don't know... i would pay for that if it was relatively cheap and nearby.
I know this might be cost prohibitive but if you worked it out with the production and distribution companies and they added an exemption for movie screening rights at a reduced price to these types/classification of movie theater it may just find a market... i don't know... I just would really enjoy that: Seeing a double feature of movies like Apocalypse Now and then Lawrence of Arabia (great on the big screen). And then the next week or two coming and seeing Fargo and The Big Lebowski. All because the group voted on it.
just a thought
