Sean Connery was offered the role of Sentinel Prime before it was offered to Leonard Nimoy. This is the second time Connery has declined a role that was closely connected to Nimoy: He previously declined the role of Sybok in Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989) to do Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989). Shia LaBeouf played his grandson in the sequel Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008).

why would they want Connery over Nimoy? (who had previous connection to TF)

Because Connery is more famous (and arguably more awesome) than Nimoy.

Between James Bond and Mr Spock, who would you want to hear?

I don't recall hearing this bit of trivia before. I thought one of the major reasons Nimoy was brought back was because he voiced Galvatron in the animated film.

Connery made a great choice in passing on The Final Frontier, that movie was garbage.

Nimoy was married to Bay's cousin. At first Bay was too afraid to offer him a voice actor job due to the low salary. That's why Bay would rather have his favorite actor Connery.
