1989 movies playing at the cinema

I love it when you see older movies playing of period set movies esp 80s set films (also see Xmen Apocalypse) so when I saw Batman and Lethal Weapon 2 playing on the theatre in June/July 89 I remembered back to my time in 89 and that awesome summer of movies and was trying to see if there was anything else on there (Indy? Star Trek V? GB2? Bond?) Then later we get a clear view and it was just those 2 films (obviously they had to have Batman there as it was the biggest movie of the year). Then later still its August and Nightmare Elm Street 5 is playing (apt for this movie – Pennywise/Freddy. As is Batman of course with the joker/Shining)

IT, Batman, Lethal Weapon 2, and Elm Street 5 are all Warner Bros. and/or New Line films. Less hassle than trying to get permission from a rival studio. (Indy was Paramount/Lucasfilm; Star Trek is Paramount/CBS; Ghostbusters is Sony; Bond is EON Productions/MGM/United Artists).

How about Gremlins and Beetlejuice posters on Bill's wall? A Gremlins poster was really outdated in 1988. Ghostbusters would've made more sense because it was a hot cartoon and toy line then and GB2 was on the way next year.

Bettlejuice made sense in a foreshadowing way as like Freddy/Joker its abit like Pennywise..

Gremlins is also abit Pennywisey and must kids always have only the latest posters on their wall? Maybe the main kid was a huge Gremlins fanatic

But yeah Ghostbusters on the wall or GB2 playing at the cinema would've made sense (ghosts, your fears coming to life Mr Staypuft etc )

I loved when Batman came out. It was a huge thing that Batman had been reimagined. Most thought of Batman as the TV series so it was completely badass to have a non-campy version. At school the batman trading cards was a huge hobby.

I remember all of the posters and merchandise in shops, like t-shirts. Good summer.

Batman made $559,666,600 inflation-adjusted. It was a massive viral hit. Only 15 movies since then have made that much, so you only get a hit like that once every couple of years.
