Jesco White is hardly the best
Check You Tube for mountain dancing, both clogging and tap, and you'll see this gas-sniffing loser is certainly not the best of the lot.
shareGas sniffing loser, huh? You may be right that he's far from the best dancer in the world, but for somebody raised in one of the most f'd up places in this country where you're expected to be in jail by 18 and die by 30, his accomplishments are amazing. There's more to being an entertainer than pure technical ability, and Jesco is a fantastically entertaining individual who should be damn proud of his life IMO.
shareHe should be proud? Of what, exactly? That he, and the rest of his family, survive on Public Assistance? That they have money for drugs but let their kids live in squalor? That the townspeople built them a home out of the goodness of their hearts and the Whites quickly turned it into the county crack house? That his daddy tried to teach him the finer points of Social Security fraud, but Jesco's brain was so fried by huffing and drugs that he couldn't master the con?
Lots of people rise above their circumstances to become better than the chance they were dealt. This drug-fried, brain dead lowlife isn't one of them.

I agee that Poney did himself and his kids a good turn by moving. However, it's mentioned by Mamie at the beginning of the documentary that Poney got in trouble (I believe for fraud) in WV ... and he "high-tailed it outta" there. So his intentions in leaving were not entirely noble.

From what I've read about Jesco, he stays away from the rest of his family and therefore absolutely none of your points relate to him, except that he used to do drugs. So did the last three US Presidents, Steve Jobs, Edgar Allen Poe, and a former US Supreme Court Justice.

So he shouldn't be proud of himself for overcoming his addiction to drugs? Addiction is a disease (depending on who you ask) that afflicts millions of Americans and a large percentage of them cannot overcome this disease. From what I've seen and heard about Jesco, he has overcome his addiction (apparently he's been clean for 30 years).
Aside from that, he was featured in two well known short documentaries about his life and talent, has made a name for himself as an entertainer, had a cameo on an episode of Roseanne, has appeared in a music video by Beck, was referenced in songs by numerous big name bands, and has voiced performances for a cartoon network show. Oh, right, and he was one of the principal characters in globally distributed Hollywood film which made millions of dollars.
You don't think that somebody born on the side of a mountain covered with garbage, drugs, and violence should be proud of themselves for having accomplished all those things? Jesco's life is not wasted. It is an inspiration to people who want to go after their dreams despite everything holding them back.
Granted, all that stuff is just a little dent in the grand scheme of things, but I'd bet anything that it's a whole lot more than you've done.

Thats funny because ive never heard anybody say or even claim jesco is the best same goes for d-ray...but the thing about jesco and d-ray is that they are from the sticks and from nothing pretty much. But ill bet their names are mentioned in more households then mine or yours...if tupac was raised in the sticks and hollers he would have never even been heard of.
shareSorry to burst your bubble, but Jesco could not possibly have been clean for 30 years. In the film he is clearly shown smoking weed and snorting pills. I know was also recently arrested on drug charges, which were dropped and he claimed to be clean and sober then. But as I said, he is shown partying in the film and saying "I love to get really f-ed up..."
