I'm Appalachian born and raised, family on both sides in Appalachia since the 1700's. Most Appalachians are Scotts/Irish. The Scotts especially that settled there were already 'mountain' rural people. They were tough as nails from the start. The Whites are a drugged out & hyper version of Appalachians. However, most Appalachian people are hyper independent, rebellious, charismatic, hate to be told what to do, never trust the government or the 'law', keep to themselves, will never tolerate arrogance, they have their own law, especially the farther in the mountains you go. When that code is broke of messing in their business or forcing them to do something they don't want to do, it may not end up well for the instigator, even if it's family that pushes them. Family is still always family, even those that move away and never return. They're tough and can survive about anything, except the drugs that unfortunately have infested the mountains. Most Appalachians are a tamed down, no nonsense, version of the Whites. I've known plenty of people like the Whites, some of my family members would even qualify but it's the minority.
