I don't understand ... ???

Several folks have said there was no where even near this kind of bullying when they were in school. I don't know if yall were "popular", and just didn't see it, or if (maybe) it was "covered-up" good by the bullies, or if, maybe as U say ... your school really had NO bullying to speak of?
But, in MY school ... there was this kind of bullying AND even worse! In my junior high school, the football coaches were THE worst bullies in school! These coaches took the very smallest, nerdy kid on the football team (shy, scared, nervous ... he only played football to try and please his Dad ... this kid didn't weigh 60 lbs. soaking wet), and they put him in the "bull ring" against the 8th grade A-team (he was 7th grade B-team back-up)! Needless to say, his thigh-bone was broke within minutes! The kid was still limping in high school!
Bullying went on regularly ... in my school, you were either a cowboy (80% of the student body) or a hippie (20% of the student body)! I was a hippie ... bullied from day one because of my hair length! I fought back, tho (plus, my best friend was the biggest guy in the school)! But we were ALWAYS trying to protect the weaker kids. The "cowboys" took every chance they could, to take kids behind the gym and cut their hair (most times with pocket knives)!
I think more bullying goes on than the normal student knows about ...

I think a lot of the problem has to do with that, as you said, a tiny minority of people fall within the bullied territory. Unfortunately, life isn't Hollywood where there's a select few bullies. Everyone tends to bully at least one other person (whether we want to admit it or not), and if you're not part of the lowest caste, it's easy to ignore (or not even see) what goes on.
