The second time through
I watched Rubicon as it aired in 2010 and loved it. Revisited it this past week watching the whole series over 3-4 days and I find it holds up just as well. Despite the seemingly slow pace, I never felt bored. There was always some new reveal with each episode that kept me wanting more. And re-watching, even knowing how it ends, I still felt compelled to just keep going after each episode.
The acting was uniformly great. Though there wasn't much humor, there were a few moments that made me laugh.
- Grant talking about MILF (Muslim International Liberation Front, or something like that) and Miles and Tanya cracking up while Grant has no clue!
- Cornflakes Spangler dismissing Cale from his office "I need to finish this...it gets soggy...". Truxton was a great villain. He played a similar character (with more of an arc) on Mr. Robot, but I really liked him here.
I think the first time I watched, I didn't expect Andy (Anne Parisse) to turn out to be a plant. Since you first are presented with Maggie (the secretary) as a possible love interest, and she turns out to (thought not a spy), be spying on Will, I figured the second introduction of a babe would be a legit one. I also think the producers did one deceptive cheat her to allay audience suspicions. When she is alone in her apartment with Will's stuff and she is gone, she is shown looking at his bag, thinking about searching, re-considering and then ultimately giving in. Since she's not just some girl across the street, she wouldn't have been the least bit nervous there or hesitated to search his stuff.
The show really set up plenty for a second season, and I'm still pissed AMC didn't continue with this great show.
