would you recommend someone watch it, after cancellation

I enjoyed it, but don't think I would really suggest a DVD to someone who hadn't watched it. Season 1 doesn't really complete a satisfying story that I could wholeheartedly recommend to a friend. The conspiracy is left untouched, Will is not significantly changed by the events of the series, other than having killed a guy (but we don't really get to see the aftereffects of that change him, because there wasn't enough time to communicate that). The secretary's storyline involving her deadbeat ex husband kind of went nowhere, even though it was fun to watch Kale intimidate the guy.

I'm not saying I'm sorry I watched it at all, it's just I was thinking about this because a friend mentioned what a big "3 Days of the Condor" fan she was.

Oh but remember even in Three Days of the Condor (which is one of my fav. movies) we don't get a 'closure' either. We never learn whether or not the NYT had printed the story. In fact we could deduce that they hadn't because nothing has changed since then.

The same can be said for Rubicon. Spangler will kill himself and it ends there. With him dead there's no chance to produce evidence against the conspirators. And that's what it's like in real life. The story doesn't end up on 60 Minutes or Larry King - it gets swept under the rug and they go on with business as usual.

So to answer your question, you're damn right I'd recommend it to people.

I think there was much more narrative closure in "Three Days of the Condor," in that the protagonist tracked down and confronted the man who ordered the deaths of his coworkers at the start of the movie and get revenge on that man through the action of the Max Von Sydow character. Sure, his ultimate fate and the ultimate fate of the conspiracy is left unresolved, but the narrative action that began the movie is resolved. The Redford character has done everything he can possibly to to resolve it. In Rubicon, almost everything is left unresolved except for Katherine Rhumor, who is murdered. The main character's conflicts are still all up in the air.

Yes but in the movie there is one main opponent and a couple of people he'd sent after the condor = easier to go against.

In the show there's a group of seven of them and they're almost all in position to influence the course of law. That's what I mean by saying that in real life, cases like this largely remain unresolved. Rubicon reflects this reality.

of course reality doesn't always equal good entertainment. there was a lot of unrealistic stuff on this show including taking the risk of creating the intentional crash of two commuter trains full of people, which would be investigated thoroghly to find out why the failure happened, to kill one person when they could do it in much simpler ways without arousing suspicion

reply

It could be that they had some benefit from that crash as well.
Use your imagination. I think you have to with show like this. You've got to read between the lines. Not everything is as it seems.

I think the whole season is worth a watch. I was pretty drawn in for the last half of the season. There are no cliffhangers, but I did want more. I would recommend this people who don't mind a little thinking with their television.

reply

im bumping this because i came here with the same question. now that the show has been canceled, should i bother to watch the first season?

reply

How about reading the answers to that question?

clearly i'm looking for more answers to that question, for a wider sampling of answers, for others to offer their opinions. duh. so far, only two people have answered it, and sorry but i don't exactly hold your opinion in very high regard. you'll also notice most of this thread is about days of the condor, not rubicon

reply

Seems to me like you've already made up your mind.

yes, i have made up my mind. i want more than your opinion. i'm glad you've finally figured that out. perhaps you could offer us a third, even more pointless, post.

reply

That's alright, I think no one will miss out by you not watching it.
