did I miss part1 of this movie?

the entire movie I kept wondering who these people were and why they were all so pained and disturbed.

I never understood the movtivation of a single character in the film.
I wanted to like the film, but was just really confused the entire way through.

I felt like there was a trailer I should have watched 1st that explained what I was about to watch. a prologue or something.

why did the 1 detective not want to investigate the murder he was assigned?
why did the other detective not want to investigate the other murders?
why did the little girl not want to go home?
why was there so many people at the little girls house?
why were they gonna kill the little girl?
why did the guy want to kill his sister?
why did the detective get divorced?
why did he keep the dog?

really, there was probably another 50 "whys" I had for this film.

I can answer some of your questions:

"why did the little girl not want to go home?"
Her mom was a abusive, drug-addicted prostitute who entertained clients all throughout the day and told her to "stay out when [she] has company." Evidenced by the fact that the mother slapped her when she caught a client staring at her daughter.

"why was there so many people at the little girls house?"
See above.

"why were they gonna kill the little girl?"
Her relationship with the cops was a problem for her brother and his friend seeing as though they're the killers (the brother's friend mainly), and she kept bringing them around the house.

"why did the detective get divorced?"
"why did he keep the dog?"
The film provided no backstory for the characters whatsoever, which is weird because it had plenty of scenes ripe for exposition. Such as the scene where Sam Worthington and Jessica Chastain are in the car.

i think it needed a 5minutes montage at the start of the film to set the scene.
