Yep, the main thing that annoyed me about the movie.

Born when she kissed me, died when she left me, lived whilst she loved me

I believe he was only hit once.

A person often survives a single gunshot wound, even to the mid-section (it didn't look like a hit to the chest from what I saw).

The handgun he was shot with appeared to be a .38 Special which is not known as a particularly lethal round, especially if the bullet is not a hollowpoint. The lack of effectiveness of the .38 round during the Spanish-American War and the Moro Rebellion in the Philippines is why the US Army switched to the .45 ACP round in 1911. The .357 Magnum round was developed later to overcome the shortcomings of the .38 Special that police were using and many law enforcement agencies now issue a .40 Caliber round.

So bottom line, it certainly is not a sure thing for a person to die from a single shot from a .38 caliber pistol, especially if it is not a hollowpoint round.

Chloe's character being rescued was also an example of Hollywoodization.
