It's official, SS has bad legs (link)

The-Numbers provides a nice, clear cut graph of SS box office performance. Based on their data, SS has "poor legs". Confirmed and official.

Did worse according to their source...

reply

Understood, but they are talking about 'legs' or the percentage drop from weekend to weekend or week to week.

Plan?...There ain't no plan!!

reply

My dude I'm just comparing the two from the source the OP provided, Civil War is much lower in the shaded area than Suicide squad, which according to the site means less legs.

reply

Oh...my apologies.

Plan?...There ain't no plan!!

reply

Did worse according to every source. Of course, that's not to say that this movie had particularly good legs either, but there have been a good chunk of blockbuster movies with worse legs, one of them being BvS.

reply

And Civil War.

reply

That too.

Nobody cares. BO is not so important, quality counts more.

Details that show CA:TWS grossed more internationally that Suicide squad.

By all accounds, Winter Soldier had GREAT legs. Slightly over 90mil opening weekend and ended up with slightly under 260mil final. That is close to a 3.0 multiplier, which is fantastic.

Get busy livin' or get busy dyin'...
...That's god damn right.

Looking at this site has been pretty interesting. I found out that Civil War, basically an Avengers movie, had worse 'legs' than SS and MoS and Age of Ultron had very similar 'legs' to these 2 movies. The first Avengers held better but didn't even reach the middle of the shaded area that indicates good 'legs'. This is a bit of a surprise to me because I totally bought the narrative about Marvel movies having great 'legs' at the box office. In actuality, MoS and SS compare favorably to most of their movies and are better than Civil War. It would seem that movies of this kind, with some exceptions, generally don't have really good 'legs'.

Just an additional edit: With more research I find that Winter Soldier, while a little better than MoS and SS, did not even come close to the halfway mark on this shaded area. The Dark Knight is similar to GotG at about the halfway mark of the shaded area.

Winter soldier made about $100 million in China. Suicide Squad did not open in China. So that actually makes Winter Soldier look bad.

Comparing Steve Rodgers, Black Widow and Falcon to Will Smith, Batman, Flash(I don't care if it's a cameo), Joker,

and Harley Quinn

does,

in fact

look bad.

Pick your poison.

This isn't particularly surprising news. Summer blockbuster films are notoriously front-loaded. Even films like Captain America Civil War and Jurassic World which largely met their expectations fall on the lower end of spectrum for "legs". As this graph is an aggregate of all films in the last 5 years it also includes films that began with limited release before expanding to a full theatrical release as well as films that were sleeper hits and act as outliers. So new flash, summer blockbusters don't tend to have good legs when compared to the rest of the market. This is not a new revelation.

reply

Thanks for the news flash Walter Cronkite. Yes, I know movies like this are front loaded but I hadn't realized how average to poor the 'legs' on Marvel movies were. Many on this board try to act like they have extremely good legs and I was somewhat jokingly pointing out that these movies tend not to have excellent 'legs'.

reply

I don't know if I would characterize them as having "poor legs" as that implies that the films have under-performed their designed revenue arc. Blockbusters largely benefit from lower multipliers. It benefits them to front load ticket sales in the first two weeks as most distribution deals with theater chains are far more heavily weighed towards the Studios in the first few weeks. The longer a film is theaters, the smaller the Studio's cut from the weekly ticket sales. So, it actually benefits films like Captain America to generate as much of their total gross as possible in the first three weeks.

reply

I can see the logic in that. However, I was surprised after hearing a lot about MoS's poor 'legs' and how great Marvel's holds were that it and SS actually compare pretty favorably to most of their movies. Civil War especially surprised me at how poor its 'legs' were. I had never really done the numbers on it.

This hasn't been the case for more than 10 years. Movie chains were filing for bankruptcy in the early 2000s because of the system and film splits are now negotiated for a flat rate before release.

According to the By The Numbers website Suicide Squad has better "legs" then the following films.

Captain America Civil War
http://www.the-numbers.com/movie/Captain-America-Civil-War#tab=box-office

Avengers: Age of Ultron
http://www.the-numbers.com/movie/Avengers-Age-of-Ultron#tab=box-office

Iron Man 3
http://www.the-numbers.com/movie/Iron-Man-3#tab=box-office

* A movie which has about the same "legs" as Suicide Squad;

Iron Man 2
http://www.the-numbers.com/movie/Iron-Man-2#tab=box-office

*A movie which according to By The Numbers has better "legs" then any of the other films mentioned so far;
Star Trek Beyond
http://www.the-numbers.com/movie/Star-Trek-Beyond#tab=box-office

But ST Beyond was a flop.
And this is one of the flaws of the entire argument about "legs" and Suicide Squad.
It doesn't fit a lot of big box office action/comic book movies.
Films which have big opening weekends can have box office that slows down quite a bit over time.
That doesn't necessarily mean that these films have bad "legs". They could have just made a lot of money in the beginning.

*Here is a small indie movie which supposedly have good legs.
My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2
http://www.the-numbers.com/movie/My-Big-Fat-Greek-Wedding-2#tab=box-office

But that's a small film that only made about $88 million total.

* By The Numbers is making apples and oranges comparisons.
All these supposed CBM bad legs movies have made much more money week by week than many supposed good legs movies.

A proper comparison is to look at big budget comic book films and other comparable comic book movies.
When doing that, Suicide Squad has done pretty well and has done much better than several films week by week such as X-Men Apocalypse.

BB ;-)

PS. Another movie according to By The Numbers which has decent legs? The flop Ghostbusters (2016).
http://www.the-numbers.com/movie/Ghostbusters-(2016)#tab=box-office

it is just in my opinion - imo - 🌈

reply

SS had good legs. Only movie (besides Deadpool) to stay in the top 10 for 8 straight weeks.
