BvS didn't deserve all that hate, Suicide Squad however....
So before anyone tries slaughtering on me, keep your knickers on, remember it's all opinions, I'm not saying my word is gospel or objective and bear in mind I mildly liked Suicide Squad but I feel it was a very mediocre movie.
Suicide Squad wasn’t great and I'm not gonna say that critics reception and fan backlash was unwarranted, the hate is very understandable. The film has a poor story, bad editing, lackluster action sequences, silly moments and one laughably bad villain from Cara Delevingne, this was a very disappointing film.
That being said there was some redeeming qualities, I think the bulk of the performances were brilliant, particularly Margot Robbie, Will Smith, Viola Davis and Jay Hernandez. I also enjoyed the little bits with Batman. The soundtrack, the music was great but the way it was cut in the film was not so good. So seeing the hate it received was understandable as it was quite a poorly made film and while I believe that WB did botch it cos of BvS' reception. It's unfortunate as it's very clear that under the surface, there's a great film there.
Now onto BvS, which I consider one of the best films made this year (The Ultimate Cut). Did this movie have problems? Yes but to me they were ones that could be easily overlooked, i.e. plot inconsistencies, too attention to subplots. So what did I get from the much reviled Batman v Superman? I got a post-modern and philosophically rich epic which took the huge risk of deconstructing and developing two beloved characters, pitting them against each other and allowing them to return to their true forms by the end of the movie. All the while, I received an understandable and great story, amazing action sequences, an awesome Score by Zimmer/Holkenborg, fine performances (yes, I liked Eisenberg as Lex) and a villain who had motivation (yes, I liked Eisenberg as Lex). Now you might not agree with me, which is absolutely fine but this is how I feel.
The critical and fan reception for BvS and Suicide Squad were pretty much the same in terms of numbers. For me these were two very different films and BvS was FAR superior, coherent and enjoyable. That being said, with Suicide Squad, I think that the performances and set up in the first 20 mins were redeeming qualities in a mediocre film and that's probably the reason I'm hovering around a 6.5-7/10 for it, I did enjoy it but the hate was understandable. BvS is a 9/10 for me, has it's flaws but is overall a very good movie.
