Cop Out (2010) Puerto Rican Mexicans
I enjoyed Cop Out. Good action, funny lines. The pace was good. The big thing that detracted from the movie (especially for Spanish Speakers)was that the Mexican Gang was made up of pure Puerto Ricans. It's like a movie with a British Gang that all speak with a Southern American Accent. Hollywood has to do much, much better when they hire casting directors. All casting directors at the very least need to take classes from linguists to learn the different accents of the world. Why is this important? If the people in the movie called an AK-47 an AR-15, or a 44 magnum a 9mm, we would see a ton of letters protesting and panning the movie for it. Well, to a Spanish speaker, calling a Puerto Rican a Mexican or a Spaniard a Cuban is like calling a Welsh or Scot an Australian. First off, the looks are very different. Mexicans have a background of Indian and Spaniard mix while Puerto Ricans add a Black background to that. So trying to pass off a person with African-American hair and hair styles as a Mexican that has no Black background is like trying to pass off a ford mustang for a chevy camaro. The casting director might think there is very little difference, but that only shows that casting director's lack of knowledge needed for his/her job. If you were going to hire an all Puerto Rican cast for the Mexican Gang, why not just make it a Puerto Rican Gang in the first place? There is no excuse for casting directors that have been hired for who they know instead of what they know. Hollywood, clean up your act. It's 2016 and the google age. You have no excuse not to research your movie before casting and making the movie.
