elder sister staying in trunk

i think that she stayed in the trunk willingly because they were told repeatedly that the outside world was only safe if you were inside the car.
she 'escaped' in her own way.
she had followed all the rules set out for her; not leaving until her dogtooth 'fell' out, and then continued to believe that the car was the ultimate escape. she would have had no idea what else could be waiting outside the fence but danger.
the car was all she could hope for.

You know, she probably dies at some point given she won't be able to get out of the trunk even if she wants to. Can't open it from inside.

I actually feel quite dumb having not immediately made that connection. She 'escaped' but it's tragic as she never really escaped, only within what would qualify as escaping based on what she had been taught. I wonder if there is another line in the film that has significance for the ending. For seemingly no reason the Father mentions that it will soon be 5 or 6 degrees hotter. She is most likely dying in the boot of the car - like a dog stuck in a hot car you might say.
