Brother who lives outside the fence?

Does anyone else feel that the brother who lives outside the fence is a real character? And do you think this has any correlation with the dream Christina had in which she and the Father were throwing rocks at the Son (who was a zombie)? I mean, what a bizarre dream to have.. Especially after the Son was punished for throwing rocks over the fence at his supposed brother.

Maybe I'm looking too much into this..

While watching the film I assumed that the "brother" was just an imaginary friend the children had invented (as children often do). But some commentators here have suggested that there had actually been an older brother who ran away, just like the older sister was trying to do. That's an interesting theory.
