How do movies like this get a Greenlight?

I'm asking in all seriousness. I have not seen the film nor do I plan to, as I find the premise absurd, but that's just me. I don't care that someone produces a movie that I find to be ludicrous, I just want to know how this is done? How does this happen? How are decent scripts passed over for movies like this or Jupiter Ascending, and on and on and on (the list is never ending). I can't wrap my head around this. You catch whiffs or hints of potentially great movies and/or plots, then they fade into obscurity and Hollywood fills the dead space with dung like this. Is the magic formula to take a classic book, and rip it apart, add several layers of ridiculousness, and then that makes it a hit? Can I just come up with oh I don't know, " The Count of Monte Cristo meets the Hunchback of Notre Dame all while attending Hogwarts fighting off nargles". (BTW - that's my idea - my idea, no stealing it!) I mean WTF - who picked this up and said - "WOW, a classic stuffy romance set to the back drop of Victorian England with, say what now, Zombies! Shut the front door *nameless genius scratches chin* Hmm The walking dead is doing pretty good right now, so I say let's run with it"! Is that how it goes down?

What makes you think there are decent scripts being passed over in favor of movies like Pride and Prejudice and Zombies or Jupiter Ascending??

I have seen Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and it is an entertaining movie.

You are a funny man. I have not read your comment [to the end] nor do I plan to, but this movie is better than Hollywood movies with 8 zeroes in their check and that is enough. Also, I guess you haven't even heard of a word like surreal, etc. As they say: go into your cave and play with your stick.

reply

You sound so condescending, just because people don't like a movie. It's stupid.

reply

As you've not seen the film your opinion is meaningless. Fckwit.

reply

You don't need to see a film to judge you won't like it.

I didn't think I'd like this one nearly as much as I did until I actually saw it. In fact, I liked it so much I've seen it 3 times and have ordered the blu-ray.

I agree. I didn't expect this movie to be anything amazing, but I thought the costumes looked pretty and I can't turn down period pieces, even if they are ridiculous sounding and have zombies. I went into the film with little to no expectations and was actually surprised at how much I enjoyed it.

I don't think all films have to be Oscar worthy material and I have definitely seen much worse. I do feel like there's definitely a lot of prejudice on these boards which is pretty funny. Let's not judge all books, or in this case movies, by their covers. So maybe it's not your cup of tea, but not everyone is going to feel the same way.

Honestly I liked this film so much I tried reading the book, which I have had on my shelf for years. Now THAT was not my cup of tea. I actually think the book is way less original and it was very hard for me to make it through. I gave it a try though, and all it did was make me appreciate the film more.

I'll put the PPZ movie on my list of guilty pleasure films that are just fun to watch, if anything just to see a bunch of beautiful people, in beautiful costumes, sometimes brandishing swords or sparring in basements.

It depends. Some things I'm open minded about. I know for a fact I wouldn't like the Saw movies for example.

reply

Yes, but the OP went into much more detail than simply not liking it. As the thread title would suggest.

I didn't read the rest of your post nor do I plan to, as I find this beginning statement absurd, but that's just me.

reply

Admits to having not seen the film and not intending to yet describes the film as dung and clearly implies the script isn't decent. I'd like to know how THAT goes down.

The setting is not Victorian, it's Napoleonic.

reply

Nope it's regency

reply

1800, that's pretty much the start of the Napoleonic era.

reply

For someone who gave "sisters" a 9/10, maybe you should not judge other movies without watching it.

reply

You've just made you mind up without seeing the movie, so your opinion isn't worth very much either way.
