There is not much difference between the helmet thing and Muslim hijab, for example. Just a slightly different reasoning.
Every clan has their set of rules. For others it may seem ridiculous, but for those in a clan, especially 1000's of years old, it makes sense. Wearing the helmet or any other requirement is a sense of honour, but it also shows discipline and willing to be part of something greater than yourself.
