....Tom Hardy REALLY overacts?
He's like a caricature and his accent is laughably bad.Sounds like a cross between Sid James and Mr C from The Shamen!
Love the show though!

His accents fine. He is meant to be playing a sinister bastard and I think that comes across pretty well. I think this is one of the berst portayals of a psychopathic gangster since Joe Pesci in Goodfellas... the smile, the body language and the voice all work really really well.

reply

I think he does a great job, the accent is there because if you read the book, you see that Freddie is always either pissed or off his head on coke or speed.

No to Lisbon, yes to Lesbian.

reply

I gather that, but if you watch Bronson, his accent is exactly the same.

I haven't got a bloody clue what you're talking about, but I AM going home, ok i admit i borrowed the line from freddie, best in series too lol.

seriously i think freddies accent was great, and i loved the little mannerisms hardy gave the character too.

Well-you say Freddie has a good cockney accent?I'm a real life cockney, and his accent is as realistic as Dick Van Dykes in Mary Poppins....

reply

it was a quote from ep4, i never said he had a good cockney accent i said the accent was great, as in tom hardy did what he could with the accent, yes i agree it was as realistic as dick van dykes in marry poppins, but that was what made it so good, it was like a parody as opposed to the real thing, meaning it was all fantasy.

sorry if i offended you

The best bit about Tom Hardy's portrayal and accent was he came across as very un-educated compared to Jimmy which made him all the more dangerous and un-predictable.

Brilliant series. Not many of them around that make you count the days till the next episode.

Oliver Twist (Bill Sykes)'s accent was the most difficult to understand however it is the true cockney accent I have read about it..very well done..

Funny you should mention Dick Van Dyke, I was comparing Tom Hardy's acting in 'The Take' to Dick in 'Mary Poppins' just this afternoon.

Predictable and cliched story, just awful acting...entertaining enough I suppose but certainly no classic...

reply

No not overacting..Just viewed it..really like the mix of different emotions displayed..It is possible to hate this guy and then understand why he turned out the way he did..ie:the way he describes the relationship between he and his father..I actually have empathy for the guy can even find humor in the situations shown..As for the accents I don't know much about them just that cockney is a true london accent according to a travelogue..I have never been there myself so I can't judge the accuracy though I suspect the accent is "spot-on". Tom Hardy knows his characters believe that he doesn't have a "bad" accent. BTW who's Sid James?

I think it was a bermondsey accent

For those who are not familiar (I am not)I looked it up its an area of London near the Thames on the south bank..Dickens wrote about this area in Oliver Twist. Bill Sikes meet a "nasty" end there. Its an industrial area in some parts...Accents would be true to life I would say.. (Wikipedia)

Rachel I didn't have ANY empathy for Freddie...

He knew right from wrong, and chose to do wrong in the end. His tears over what happened between Freddie and Little Jimmy were too little to late. I'll give him a few props sending his son away in the end...

And what's this about accents? I thought Freddie was just trying to sound 'gangsta'

I watched RocknRolla last night and Tom Hardy's accent in that is just a normal london accent. I think the point that someone made about Freddie being constantly on speed and drunk is the main reason for his tone and accent in the show.

Really interesting to see the different aspects of Tom Hardy's acting. I look forward to seeing more of him in the future.

It's funny that no one has mentioned the ironic scene where Freddie pulls the chavvy rave organiser up on him faking an east London accent. Said chav is actually a posh boy from Windsor. Am I right in thinking Tom Harding's real accent is closer to the one he used in Star Trek: Nemesis? What Tom did, I believe, was an authentic mockney accent - I'm an expert on these having grown up in Uxbridge.

As for over-acting, I did start thinking this while watching the mini-series but as people have mentioned this is how the character was portrayed in the book.

Not a bad drama all-in-all, a bit cliché, not worth 8.7. Having recently watched all 5 seasons of The Wire, The Take doesn't come close. One reviewer of The Take said Americans can't do dark drama, ahem, this was pantomime compared The Wire, imho.

Tom is from East Sheen is that considered "posh"? just wondering..
Its a good drama but alot of americans aren't aware of it..I hope it'll be on our tvs soon. BBC America provides us with alot of good English dramas.

..is it me but seeing Tom Hardy in 'The Take' it looks like he's had something done to his lips..collagen? - definintely looks a bit 'Angelina Jolie'
Doesn't suit him at all!

I think Tom Hardy and his lips really made the show for me! :)

His portrayal of Freddie Jackson is scarily accurate to the character in Marina Cole's novel... IMO

reply

No, I don't think that at all! He's brilhant at it. The best perfomace of the show!

Wow, I have never seen a comment go so fast from being just an expression of opinions on a show to racist slurs. Normally it's either or:P

Um.. no? He NAILED that part. I was blown away. One of his best performances.
