shareNah, it's a really big character, requiring explosive, over-the-top actions, but I thought Hardy's acting was remarkable. No matter how ridiculously big the behavior, he was thouroughy, distressingly convincing.
"Why would a banana grab another banana? Those are the kinds of questions I don't want to answer."
I agree. It's not that it was very, very bad or anything, but it seemed like the same style as how he played Bronson- which worked awesomely in that film because it was very theatrical and we were supposed to see that character as a kind of over-the-top performance artist, right?
shareYeah I kind of agree to a certain extent. He did seem like he was channelling the Bronson performance a little.
However, episode 4 was amazing. Hardy was excellent in it as well. His acting in the scene where he sees the boy in the morgue was phenomenal. There were a couple of scenes in the 4th episode where Hardy has to do some really emotional work.
All in all, I didn't think a great deal of The Take - until part 4 came round. I liked the twist-ish ending. I honestly didn't think the story would play out like it did - and move away from the 'friends rivalry' kind of plot it was heading towards.
are you joking? Tom Hardys character was a Power Hungry drugged up coked up sociapathic Gangster with serious issues and you thought he was over the top? The guy payed the role to perfection. To the swagger all the way down to the speach. He was ruthless, scary and so convincing. A brilliant actor who played a brilliant role..
shareDon't know what you are basing your assessment of the authenticity of his character on as it was, as someone else put it, pantomime and not in a good way.
Over top yes and needed to be, but well off the mark as essentially had zero menace and the character did not develop in any way over the ten year span the series was meant to cover e.g. the swagger you mention is a hallmark of a young wide boy but morphs into a 'less is more' kind of walk to present an air of success and attract less unsolicitated attention.
I do like him as an actor but this kind of portayal was certainly more suited to Bronson which was an entirely different method of story telling as was veiwed from within the characters mind so an absolute fantasy. The Freddie character did not suit this style as he had to interact with others, the Bronson character did not.
Overall, I think it was a pretty poor series.
Oh definately,he was terrible!!!
Don't get me wrong,I think Tom Hardy is a great actor. He was definately great in Inception and RocknRolla.
But his acting in this show was terrible. It was WAY too over the top,and was a pain to watch.
In fact this entire show was a pain to watch!!!!
I should have known those alien maggots booby trapped this sub.
Sure he's over the top, but it's not such a bad thing in his case. Great actors like Jack Nicholson and Al Pacino among others go over the top very often and make it work. Hardy does it and I think makes it work and I kind of look forward to see him do it.

I agree with mikesh - I also thought of Nicholson and Pacino (and Brando). This lurid melodrama required an over the top performance that still had some kind of basis in actual human emotions and I think Tom Hardy was great - he's the one good thing in it, and his performance is the one reason I've recommended it to others.
shareHis character was a terrifying sociopath. He did a great job. It was the first the first project of his that I have ever seen. Two weeks after watching The Take, I turned on some movie on tv. Unbeknownst to me he was in it. When I saw him on screen I felt scared for a few seconds because all I could think was "that's guy is a violent sociopath".
shareyes i noticed this to he seemed almost to animated kind of reminded me of a young rob deniro.Toothy smile included that's what puzzles me about people comparing him to marlon brando .He hasn't earned the title of being compared to brando let alone labeled being better then him .In the take it almst seemed like he was over acting in this show .Very cheesy
shareFINALLY,somebody who understands!!!
He was TOO angry, that's the bottom line. You never saw him smile,or laugh,or anything like that.
He was just an angry person throughout the whole show, and that was horrible!!!
A terrible performance from a great actor. So sad!!!

Dude,I got mad skills!!!
This was such a horrible story. And such a waste of Tom Hardy's talent.Taking a great actor and reducing him to this level of performance is an insult to the industry!!!
This show should never have been made.It should have just stayed a book!!!
