Did anyone think it odd that one (or two) of the women was taking painkillers casually, and then when Alireza arrived they offered him a "sedative"? With alcohol being illegal, do Iranians pop pills instead?

Im guessing she meant benzos. As in Valium or Xanax. However, youth do take methadone pills recreationally too. But in the context of the movie, more likely than not by sedative it was meant benzos. Anti-anxiety medication.
