I've read it and it's a bit different, the ending stronger and sorta supernatural. Plus the lesbian/mother figure aspect is emphasised.

I would say the film is also "supernatural."
But the film is subtle. The supernatural element is hidden in an allegory.
Notice, that the happy family portrait is not in the film. That is a very significant difference.

The happy family picture/portrait does feature.... They are pictured (more like a poster) as a wholesome triad family in the wating area at Catherines work.
