In the scene, Catherine says that Michael ran off with his music teacher, a 26-year-old woman. Catherine drove her away and brought Michael home.

shareHe was in therapy because of his messed-up parents, as demonstrated when they fought in front of him and, when he expressed distress over witnessing that, they got angry with him, like it shouldn't affect him at all. I'm sure this was just the tip of the iceberg of lousy parenting that occurred under that strangely-designed roof of that strangely-designed house.
His comment during that scene also implies a lifetime of lousy parenting--"I can't wait to get the *beep* out of here!" Can't blame him at all for that.
Dumb-ass parents.
