What was the point of chloe being ill?

Okay so we see in the hotel room scene (where Chloe supposedly just had sex with Catherines husband) sneeze and say she feels like she's coming down with something. To which Catherine replies have you seen a doctor?
We then see Chloe sneeze again as they're leaving the hotel room and at one point Chloe says it's because she's taking zinc?
I felt this was emphasized a little, as if to make the audience actually notice she's sick but i didn't get the point of it...If anyone has any input that'd be great ;)

reply

Chloe was searching for a mother. I think that sneezing stuff was meant to show us that Catherine wanted to be a mother. Catherine was always intruding into Michael's life, but he was a young man and no longer needed constant attention from Catherine. Chloe was a perfect match for Catherine because Chloe wanted and Needed Catherine.

Mummy w/benefits, eh? Banking that neither Springer, Berman&Berman, or even Masters&Johnson have yet documented such a phenomena.

Well, they say girls with "Daddy Issues" go for older men; why can't a girl with a "Mommy Issue" go for an older woman?

You come on a board and enter a thread that obviously would contain spoiler, then get mad because the movie was spoiled for you. And why would you watch the movie and browse it's IMDB page at the same time.

Because sponges never have bad days.

reply

I think he was only joking. Clearly there wasn't much of a spoiler there as the thread is about Chloe's cold.

if you came on imdb while watching a movie and opened a thread about the significance of a character appearing ill, then you were begging for spoiler. Obvious the OP was wondering what her being ill meant in the big picture, and the big picture may carry a spoiler, don't you think?

Sure posting spoiler alerts is nice, but her title put out enough information to say that she was seeking detailed responses, which would likely contain spoilers. Though she even described some scene with enough detail to spoil minor plot points, you know this movie is about a woman trying to find out if her husband is cheating and this other woman is involved in finding out the truth by powers of seduction, so it's not like saying they supposedly slept together in the hotel room is a crazy spoiler, the crazy spoiler would be if she said Chloe is pretending she is sick maybe like she is pretending to be f-ing her husband. now that's a real spoiler.

reply

Excellent question!

My interpretation is that illness resembles vulnerability?

At the start of the film when Catherine met up with Chloe in the cafe after Chloe's first encounter with David, Catherine was coughing a little.
Laster in the hotel scene Chloe felt for Catherine and therefore she became vulnerable - hence she became sick.

reply

see you later:

Wow,

Good observation there!

Astute interpretation too!

I have just one question,

If someone coughing can have symbolic meaning in this film, how come the light associated with Chloe and the darkness associated with David have no symbolic meaning?

thanks a lot for putting it out there! give an effing spoiler alert next time you twat

It's not a spoiler, her being ill really reveals nothing nor adds anything to the movie.

Anyway, I was thinking the plot would go the route that she had AIDS and faked the test results.

Do you actually believe that?

Isn't it symbolic of the special connection that Chloe feels for Catherine?

Ever hear of sympathetic vibration?

Do you remember the scene when Chloe crashes her bike? Catherine had just tried to pay her off, but then returns to patch Chloe's knee. Catherine is drawn to Chloe too.

These women are connected on a special level. (I'll go out on a limb: they are connected on a spiritual level.) That's the whole point of this film.

The scene where Chloe crashes her bike, Catherine was obvioulsy in two minds. The woman in her said hell no! Stay away from that crazy b**ch! But the doctor in her just couldn't leave her. So if she were a Litigator for instance instead of a doctor, Chloe would have been left bloodied and bruise on the floor!

No, I don't think so. Catherine also wanted to be a mother -- that's why she's always interfering with Michael's life. She wanted to mother him as if he were a child.

Also you forget the beginning, where Catherine is looking out her and watching Chloe enter the Hotel. This scene shows us that Catherine is drawn to Chloe from the start.

Well this will solve all of your problems: Always assume a message board about a movie will actualy talk about said movie. And will therefore reveal plot details. Now I suspect we will never hear from you on this issue again. You wouldn't be stupid enough to make that mistake twice would you?

Mmm maybe because Catherine shows concern to her whenever she's hurt (bike accident) or sick. Maybe she wanted that feeling of being taken care of.

reply

When Catherine's husband wasn't sneezing or sick in the following scene, it further proved that Chloe was lieing. If she slept with him, Catherine's husband would have gotten the flu, too...

I think it might just be a 'clue' the writer decided to throw in.

reply

I agree Chloe was searching for the maternal side of Catherine (as displayed with her interactions with her patients)

At that point I thought that perhaps her husband would come down with something too implying they'd been together but obviously this did not happen as they hadn't

They like it better than no thing.

I also thought that Chloe had AIDS and she was trying to deliberately infect the son to get back at Catherine.

reply

I thought it was that Catherine thought Chloe was disgusting/germy/diseased. Did you see the look on Catherine's face when Chloe sneezed? Catherine about jumped out of her skin.

No.

Catherine expresses concern for Chloe, and Chloe says she's taking zinc. Catherine asks if it works. I think Catherine is being motherly in this scene.

We see this also when Chloe makes her first report to Catherine. Catherine asks how Chloe can do what she does. I think it's more than curiosity. Catherine realizes that Chloe has a hard lonely life. Deep down Catherine wants to care for Chloe.

The reason Chloe pretended to be sick was because she was appealing to Catherine's emotions . At the beginning of the film, Chloe discusses how she becomes what her clients want her to be. Catherine wanted to find that her husband had cheated on her (because she suspected that she already had proof), so Chloe gave her that illusion, just like she purposely scraped her knee and feigned illness. Catherine wanted to be motherly and she wanted to feel needed, so Chloe gave her that feeling as well.

No. I don't think Chloe was pretending.

Chloe was searching for a mother figure. That was her problem -- Catherine was not a client.

I think you are completely right. From the beginning, Chloe said she has a gift of being able to know what a person wants. If they wanted her to be "the English teacher they always hated" blah blah then she would be. The first hint that they may not have been having an affair with her was when he smelled the lotion and asked what perfume it was. She thought it meant that he smelled it before but you could see in his face there was no familiarity. Chloe gave her [Catherine] what she wanted. Someone to make her feel desirable. Someone to take care of [her flu]. Someone to answer her questions. I also don't think either of them loved each other, they just were wrapped up in what they could fill up in each others lives. Also, I'm wondering if Chloe was ever a prostitute. Or whether Catherine just assumed she was and when that was what she needed, she became that. You see her with men. But couldn't they just be men she sees. I know in the movie it is based on, the women was a prostitute but I'm just wondering if anyone else thought this.

Yes.

Many people who have looked at this board know that I believe Chloe was more than an ordinary girl -- more than what she appeared.

At the very least, the symbolism says she was something sacred.

^^This. Catherine is genuinely concerned for Chloe. I also thought that Chloe had AIDS or something and was trying to get the son sick.

Yes. I think everyone missed this. Chloe's ''blood tests'' were likely fakes (she lied constantly). The revenge sex with the son was likely to infect him with HIV, which highly, highly possible she had.
