I beg your pardon?

Butter carving? Annual contest? Annual butter carving contest? A movie about an annual butter carving contest? Butter? Carving? Contest? I beg your pardon?

Thank you! My thoughts exactly... What's next a movie on jam?

Actually, I read the script yesterday and I have to say it was refreshing. I always welcome a film that takes on a subject that hasn’t been covered.

The movie is set within a small Iowa town, but the subject isn’t all about butter! Plus, the way it is described, I’m actually interested in seeing the butter carving, because I’ve never seen it before. (I had to Google it!)

It’s nicely done.

I can’t wait to see which 12 year-old black child actress they cast in the role of Destiny.

I am also quite intrigued to see if the dialogue changes because Jennifer Garner’s character has a lot of swear words and racist comments, which I’ve never seen her do.

my thoughts exactly. but hey Jennifer Garner will be in it and Ashley Greene, who i love, so i will go and watch it deffo when it comes out.

You never see me betting against Alice.
Never scheme against Blair Waldorf, she will always win.

as a native iowan, my first thought upon coming across this title was, "iowa?" and yep, it's iowa!

So would you rather see yet another movie about the same topics they've made movies about for 100 years? At least this sounds like someone is trying to be original. Plus, this is an indie, and indies are great for exploring little subcultures...like "Sunshine Cleaning," for example.

reply

Don't be so precious, it was clearly a mock reaction to an unusual proposal, and it's not an unreasonable one to be honest.

that would depend on whether you had so little imagination that the very notion, of a film about a butter carving competition, startled you so much that you actually had to voice your utter disbelief in the form of a thread topic on imbd.

reply

Oh give it a rest. I don't think it depends on any of those things. I think it depends on having a throwaway remark to make about a subject and being bored enough to write it down. To someone who's never heard of butter carving, it's undeniably bemusing, at least for the space of time it must have taken between finding out about it and tapping out a couple lines.

well, that still doesn't make it any less true. in fact, it also makes it self-indulgent. i'm not saying it's crime. just utterly pointless. not that that's a terrible thing. message boards are mostly filled with pointless stuff. like what we're doing right now.

reply

it's a huge deal at many state fairs. Google it.

reply

give it chance, it's funny
the audience went pretty crazy for it so it wasn't just me

reply

I love the cast so it still may get me but that trailer was awful.

I agree. Looks to me like the writer was going for more of a low key absurdest satire and the director is going for the Hangover with butter. Or maybe it's just strategic mismarketing? Whatever it is, it's not working for me.
