question about the little blond boy (spoilers)

I was watching this movie and was confused about the family that Destiny stays with. In one scene, when she shows them the butter sculpture that "beheads" a butter character there is a little blond boy on the couch between the parents. He is only again seen towards the end when her carving has been damaged and he turns to her and says, "what are you going to do now?" I would have just thought he was a random kid had it not been for the fact that he was on the couch with the family earlier...
I am confused when the dad explains to Destiny that he and the mom couldn't have any children and wanted to adopt an older child... that would have been a good time to mention where the blond boy came from.

Did I miss something?

He is Destiny's friend from her new school. On her first day when they are drawing a tree, he gives her a pencil. They become friends after that.

On Destiny's first day of school she meets him in class. He's just a friend from school.

yeah i think there are scenes on the cutting room floor explaining that they're friends or something.

The little boy is her foster brother. Her foster mom can nto have her own children and the blonde boy is also a foster kid living in the home..

No he isn't... he is the little boy from her class who gave her a pencil. He is just her friend, probably her best friend. I don't know about you, but sometimes I like to have my friends over to my house or have my best friend be apart of big things that are happening in my life.

Did that really need explanation? He gave her a pencil on her first day of school, he was nice to her, he was at her house when she was practicing the butter sculpture, he went to the competition with her and Jill/Evan... I think the fact that they were friends was quite easy to pick up on. I doubt there was a scene they cut that spoon-fed this very obvious piece of information to the audience.

How did so many people miss the first appearance of this boy in the movie?
