This movie is getting a lot of crap...
I thought it was funny and really good. Thoughts?

I actually enjoyed it.
sharewanted badly to enjoy it
but did not
not sure if it was the bad script or bad acting or bad casting or bad day to watch it
gave it 5/10 because truly want to believe the producer, director, screen writer, actors etc wanted to do a good movie
however, it turns out to be one of those with poor little african american girl against her white world
much prefer Akeelah and the Bee
I LOVED this movie. I found it witty and original, funny, sad but overall just a great entertaining movie. NO it's not a simple "poor little African American girl against her white world". It's a black girl using her brain, heart and courage in the world in general......SPOILERS........she starts out referring to all whites as "crackers" but by the end she learns to trust some of us crackers and not to be so cynical. The movie made me laugh a lot plus it wasn't the typical "revenge" movie plot. Everyone involved learned and changed their outlook, some more than others.
shareI rented it from the Red Box and I watched it twice before I returned it !
I LOVED it
I agree. Watched it with my older kids and we all loved it. Anyone that has a problem with the movie has bigger problems then the movie.
shareRight wing Republicans are the ones who would have a problem with it. They probablly think "How dare do they let a little black foster child win at any conterst against a white Republican women"
shareDuring the first half I was questioning my choice in watching this, but by the end I was having a great time. I don't understand people who say the acting was bad - it was intended to be over the top, folks!
This is one of those movies that I liken to a mirror... It only shows you what you are, nothing else.
If this movie makes you angry because a little black girl beats a white fundamentalist, you're a bigot.
If this movie makes you queasy about Olivia Wilde's sexuality, you're a puritan.
If this movie makes you equate Yara's character to Harriet Tubman, you're also a bigot.
If this movie makes you think Iowa is some backward-ass state filled with Bachmann-esque stereotypes, you're a snob.
If this movie prompts you to write a four-page screed about the evils of butter, you're a moron.
I quite enjoyed this film, and while there are absolutely valid criticisms of it, I find that the reaction of each individual viewer tells us a lot more about the viewer than it does the movie.
Everyone who ever loved you was wrong.
