The Dragon Tattoo

I thought by the 3rd movie, some information regarding the meaning behind the Dragon Tattoo would be revealed.

Was it explained?

Not really. Lisbeth's doctor asks her why she got the tattoo and she just replies that it was for personal reasons. He then says it must have hurt and she replies that she suffered.

Body modification (tattoos, piercings) is commonly done by victims of assault and abuse as a way of "reclaiming" their bodies. The dragon image is a pretty powerful one, too. I think of Spanish pop singer Eva Amaral, a real-life "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo." She didn't have an abusive childhood, merely a difficult and awkward one, but for her the tattoo means strength, fearlessness, and independence.

I think the blanks are easy enough to fill in.

It was never explained in the three books, but if Stieg Larsson hadn't died, I think he was supposed to explain the meaning later on in the series.

It was never explained in the three books...
True, but I think it has something to do with dragons, like LS, breathing fire, on her father ... a pivotal moment in her life.

Well it is not explained in the books either, but we see that she gets a new tattoo every time something very significant happens to her what she wants to remember forever, may it be good or bad. Based on that I believe her large dragon tattoo would be the memory of that her father did to her mother and how she revenged it.

The thing is the first book isn't called "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" that was just the title it was marketed in English. The correct translation to the title was "The Girl Who Hated Men".

Actually, the original title of "Män som hatar kvinnor" translates as "Men who hate women".
