Well, it's sort of is in both. You know that Paolo Roberto witnesses Mimmi getting kidnapped by Niedermann and follows him, and there's the fight and the fire. When they report these events, the police decide Salander might not be the killer after all. But, she's still their prime suspect, and the media circus surrounding Salander continues.
Lisbeth is on her way to Gosseberga and Zala. And after the fight, Niedermann escapes and kills one or two policemen. It's not until now when the police have a clear picture about the relationship between the three of them, and they realize (in Hornet's) that it's Niedermann who killed Mia and Dag. And Bjurman. But I honestly can't say exactly when, or where they do realize that it's not Lisbeth, I have to rewatch it again, ha. But it becomes more and more clear, during the final of Fire, because Lisbeth is never charged with the murder of them in the trial in Hornet's.
