Wasn’t this a PBS series too?

I had a snooty teacher who said that was the only thing he watched on tv

It didn't originate on PBS but I am sure they showed it. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (1979) and its follow up Smiley's People (1982) were mini series starring Alec Guinness as the character George Smiley. They are both sort of sequels to the film The Spy Who Came in from the Cold (1965) starring Richard Burton, Rupert Davies played George Smiley in this one.

I have not seen the film or Smiley's People, but I quite liked Tinker.

Right, Alec Guinness. Thanks, now I remember it more. You’re right it was a British production but shown in the US on PBS.

It was a BBC series. These were based on the written works of famed British author John Le Carre.

Well, I had a brain-dead barber who said he only ever watched 'Friends'. So between the two they balance out, I suppose.

Did he give you the “Rachel” hairdo?

sidenote, rando memory: There was a reality show on in the early 2000s about this hairdresser who only did the “Rachel” haircut, regardless of how it suited the client. He charged $800 for it too.
