This is one of the more confusing casting decisions I've ever seen.
Black people want more stories about actual important historical Black figures. And they deserve as much.
What on earth were they actually trying to accomplish here?

It's deliberate trolling.
They know it will be controversial, they know it will cause anger, they know it will get attention.
But most of all, they know they can get away with it.
For all the controversial attention it might draw, nobody will actually watch it though.
I think they simply made a major miscalculation on this one. And it will likely ruin Jodie Turner-Smith's (who's married to Joshua Jackson, btw) career, because she will be the one taking all the heat for it.
Just bad decisions all around. I'll be surprised if it has any decent viewership.
I suspect it will get big audiences AND rave reviews. We'll see.

It feels so weird having to argue that you cast white actors for white characters and black actors for black characters.
It's pretty racist that the entire entertainment industry has written off the history of an entire race. Are there no stories to tell there? No important black figures? No? Can't be arsed? Just cast a black actor as a white character. Much less effort.
