Turned it off after 10 minutes...

...or whenever he launched into that anemic version of "Jukebox Hero." I couldn't take it anymore.

I'm a fan of several musicals. I enjoyed the first couple seasons of Glee. I was a teen in the 1980s, with songs like "Jukebox Hero" and "Don't Stop Believin'" among my favorites. But I'm not the target audience for this movie.

This movie is for people who don't mind hearing all the passion and meaning sucked out of classic songs.

This movie is for people who found Glee too sharp and witty, and thought that Glee's songs were too well integrated into the plot.

This movie is for people who don't like it when the songs in musicals organically move the story along, and prefer to have character development replaced by songs with only one or two relevant lyrics.

No thanks.

Yeah....This movie is extremely lame. I made it 9 minutes.

It is most lame. I thought I should turn it off after the first credits, but decided to persevere by using the FF button. Before everyone sounded like chipmunks in the movie, that Hough chick already did. The music is insufferable. The story is dreadful, and so boring, even on FF. Alec Baldwin looked ridiculous....and Tom Cruise...well he is a brainwashed cult member that's hard to get past, just like his moley moley moley.
I like Bryan Cranston, but I could stand no more after 1.5 hrs. NO.

I didn't like the acting, but loved the music.

I'm confused about who this film is for, and what its appeal is. At first, I thought it was a comedy/satire about a forgettable time in American music and culture. But, apparently there are people who enjoy this? I suppose its the Glee crowd and those who nostalgize this.

I grew up with this music, but I hated it. The "smart" kids were listening the Talking Heads, REM, U2 in those years. That's not a boast, its just the truth.

What's funny is that by 1987, the hair band dude's days were numbered. By 1991, hair band music was deader than dead, and thankfully the Seattle sound and the second punk era had come.

I'm with you, sort of. I too am confused, half the time I was trying to figure out whether or not I was in the target audience. For oldies like me, who grew up in the 80's, (a smart kid, I'd like to think, listening to both hair metal and REM), the music bit isn't good enough. It's a parody, but not a Spinal Tap-funny-parody. And young kids? Do they get it and enjoy it? They obviously love films with love stories and music in them, (a friend's daughter once told me High School Musical 3 was the best movie she'd ever seen. She's grown up, I'm happy to say), but do they enjoy this music, this scene?

Also I was confused about the date. 1987 was not the heyday, was it? I mean, as soon as Guns'n Roses came along, you sort of knew where this was going.

I'll try and watch the rest of it, but I just don't ... get it.

1) It's an awesome movie

2) I hate Glee, nothing to do with the Glee crowd.

3) Why would anyone want to forget this time in American Music?

I mostly agree, but unfortunately, hair bands had a bigger impact then you acknowledge. I also hated hair bands, but the "smart" kids were merely followers of those who were listening to "smart" kid bands several years earlier. Ironically, many were critics of that music at first, before it became associated with "smart" kids.

The really smart kids (i.e. not those associated with "smart" kids or the general college radio group) were listening to punk and punk-inspired music during it's first run. The smart kid scene would later pick up on this and help revive punk, but it was always a revisionist history for punk music. Alternative had punk influences, but it would be wrong to associate it with either punk eras.

As far as I'm concerned, the end of the punk scene was about 1982 and everything since has been wannabes who failed to understand what it was about. Alternative music was great, but that's because it was different in it's own way. I don't have many positive things to say about the other "punk" eras.

Probably, but maybe this movie is also for those who just don't try to get "in to" the movie.

I never take movies seriously, I just watch to enjoy.
Obviously their music wasn't as good as any original songs but I enjoyed one big part of this. I was born in 1987 and the scene of Tower Records reminded me of my childhood. Not the music in there (that part actually sucked) but just seeing the record store.

you like Glee? are you 14 years old? (I dont believe you were a teen in the 80s )

reply

Yea, it's a bit ironic listening to a glee fan talk about this stuff.

reply

I agree. I managed to make it through the whole movie. Don't get me wrong, I love the eighties music, but that's an insult to the artist who sang those songs. If there's anything I hate more when it comes to movies, it's musicals. All musicals to be exact! The actors act so f...ing retarded. The producers of these types of movies need to retire of this it's all they have to resort to.

reply

If you hate musicals, why watch this movie in the first place to then come on a discussion board to trash it?

reply

If you turned it off after 10 minutes, how do you expect anyone to take your opinion serously???

reply

It's not for you, we get it.

But don't try to tell us who this movie is for, because you are way off.

Just take your ball and go home and don't pretend you're better than the people who love it by insulting them.

reply

but it's crap, the story structure is very bad, wasted some good music.

Just turned it off after Catherine Zeta-Jones disastrous performance in the church, 32 minutes in. I really tried to like this. Why would anyone cast her in a movie like this. Horrible.....
