While I think the guy playing Lonny was good, I couldn't stand the way the character was written. 5 minutes in I was starting to regret the £60 I'd paid for tickets, but overall the musical performances were great - it was just the base Butlins-esque humour that grated. It's a shame, because during the scripted-unscripted bit where they start looking through the programme, the actors were at their funniest all night. The scores of 50 year old women cackling around me as they rolled out the billionth 'invisible knob' gag in the history of writing made me aware that they were at least writing for their audience, and I was probably in the minority at least.
Looking at clips of the original Broadway cast, the portrayal of Lonny is really different. Does he come out swinging nunchucks like the UK tour version does, or have we suffered rewrites? It's been a few years since I saw the film so I don't think I had any expectations of how the characters would act, but the writing just seemed completely 'off' to me.
(Don't think I'm not a fan of crude humour, the last musical I went to see before this was Book of Mormon and I loved every second of it!)
