Honor? The director has no clue and only when it fits the story line
Bad movie, the director added so many plot twists that he has no time for any depth, let alone any consistency.
I can still overlook the overuse of magic, monsters and witchcraft if you just consider it to be an adventure story.
The honor part however, which is the central element of this movie, goes out the window when the story has twisted into a dead end:
So, Lord Asano's men owe it to their honor to exact revenge on Lord Kira. They wait a year and attack Lord Kira with 47 men who, to make it 'more interesting', has an army of over a thousand samourai, an 8 foot tall ironclad bodyguard and a witch to protect him.
Long combat ensues, not too bad visually, but clearly Kira's samurai are just cannon fodder who never wielded a sword in their lives. Oishi kills Lord Kira, Kai (Keanu) kills the witch while the other 45 ronin hold off the thousand other samurai without any of the good guys dying... Yeah right, but ofcourse you still need all 47 for the end scene.
And then Oishi simply shows the army the head of Lord Kira and they all drop their weapons and bow down for the victor... They even escort the 47 ronin out of the castle while still bowing down...
THIS IS NUTS!!!!!!! Any and all samurai would kill the 47 for murdering their lord. After all, that's their honor code! This is exactly why the 47 want to kill Lord Kira! But Lord Kira's men simply don't bother with all that crap, they're probably not samurai, just kitchen help with nice armor on. Forget about all that bushido, honor, duty, just bow your heads and smile....
The director tried to add so many 'interesting' twists that in the end he just threw out the entire honor theme just so the good guys could live (a little longer).
Yeah, they all had to commit seppuku for murdering Lord Kira. But wait! Let's add a final twist and let the son of Oishi live to continue his blood line because he's so honorable. 46 guys who commit seppuku or 47, what's the difference after all. For crying out loud!
