why did they have to speak English?

It ruined -EVERYTHING- for me! Hopefully whoever made that decision was banned from making any other movies after this...

it ruined "-EVERYTHING-"? Why so dramatic, dude?
It was an American movie made for American audiences with a Canadian lead, what were you expecting them to speak? And really, does that ruin -ANYTHING-? Not really.

I found it frustrating as well. I think the reason is Mr Reeves. He simply doesn't speak Japanese. Not because it is an American production or that americans can't read (I'm sure they can). Anyway this movie was an insult to the real epic. If this version was to be written in the 18th century, the whole cast and crew would be executed by orders of the Shogun. The pirates first.

The movie was shot in both Japanese and English, Japanese for Japanese audiences and English for the international market.

I don't suffer from insanity; I enjoy every minute of it.

The movie was not shot in Japanese. There is a Japanese dubbed audio track. Keanu doesn't know what he's talking about in those press conferences, btw.

And holocaust movies have english people speaking english. 47 Ronin has Japanese people speaking english in Feudal Japan. The point is it comes off as ridiculous and counter to the whole "Japanese history" the film prides itself on.

American audiences have been able to watch Japanese movies in their original language with subtitles for decades. So the producers of this 175 million dollar film obviously did not know their market. Ruroni Kenshin live action (2012) and 13 Assassins (2010) proved that. Even IF the Japanese do not want to release the english subtitles officially LOL.

If Keanu actually learned Japanese for this role, it would make his character more credible (growing up in Japan and all).

Hurricane Lenore. Sounds like some old-maid-aunt that's coming to kick your ass.

Why are there so many Holocaust movies in English? Can't they speak Jewish?

reply

LOL Jewish is not a language, it's a religion. and those Jews were europeans so they did not all speak Hebrew.

reply

Because this movie is aimed at kids under 10 and brain damaged adults.

reply

There were American actors in this who may not speak Japanese.

Also, all the Japanese actors, who spoke fine English, may have turned it down if this wasn't going to be an opportunity to demonstrate English skills, which is required to further their career in film.

reply

Why did they speak English? Because it's a fantasy romp for the American market, that's why.
