In reality a low status boy of mixed race (or anyway a suspicious non-Japanese male) of this time period would have been gelded.

Yeah. In "reality" there aren't any demons or shape-shifting fox/dragons or magical spiders or supernatural swords or ogre-fights on European ships either.
