5/10. Here's why:

47 RONIN is the fantasy version of a real story. That didn't offend me, but it did confuse me. I mean, the story had enough strenght on its own; it didn’t need embelishment. By the way, you can’t make a movie where the humans battle a monster within the first 15 minutes and then not show something similar until the climax. There are other creatures, but no one really fights them. I also wasn’t offended by the addition of an American. Actually, KAI (just like Keanu Reeves) is half-Asian. And I also was confused by it because he doesn’t feel like the protagonist. He barely gets any screen time and development, which is why Reeves doesn’t get much to work with. OISHI was the one that felt like the protagonist and Hiroyuki Sanada’s performance received 47 applauses from me.

Any thoughts?

I agree, Oishi should have been the protagonist and Kai maybe his loyal sidekick! Pointless movie with a very poor lead female (Mika) and just too many inconsistencies, like the one you pointed out above. I've just finished watching the DVD and tbh I don't feel like I'll give this a repeat viewing. Ever. A 6/10 at best...

Actually, I felt that Kai's involvement was that of a supporting protagonist, sort of like Jack Burton in Big Trouble in Little China (but much more competent, serious, and less funny). He clearly wasn't the true "hero" of the flick but was the protagonist nonetheless. In short, Kai was indeed the sidekick to Oishi's hero, but at the same time is the protagonist just like Jack Burton was to Wang, the true "hero" of Big Trouble in Little China.
