A great fantasy samurai movie!

I just got the blu-ray version and I love it! For those who don't watch samurai movies, I can see them not liking the pace and tone of the movie.

reply

I'm going to watch it soon, I have a feeling I'll be pleasantly surprised.

This is not a samurai movie! This is a melodrama that takes place in a fantastical, slightly historical Japan.

The phrase you are looking for, by the way is Jidaigeki films. As opposed to the more swashbuckling chambara flicks ... but surely you knew that. Right? I mean, you are some kind of "samurai" aficionado after all.

As someone who draws much inspiration from the works of Akira Kurosawa, i myself found this movie SUCKED MONKEY BALLS. Perhaps you watched a different film?

Like he said, fantasy samurai movie. That's exactly what it is, and a very good one at that. It adds fantastical elements to a decently accurate and beautifully visualized portrayal of samurais in feudal Japan, and if you remove the stick from your as- you might find it to be quite entertaining.

It was BORING.

Just one of many reasons why this movie flopped the big one. Pick any shield you want (such as calling it a fantasy), the movie will still suck. Forever.

reply

No, it was NOT boring; it is an adult fantasy film about honor, revenge, and love that's bigger than guy-on-gal romance.

I really liked the film, BECAUSE the pacing was slow. You have time to absorb and reflect, instead of the western non-stop fighting ridiculousness. More films would be better if they took a note from this VERY under-rated work.

And I think Keanu was an excellent casting decision. But to bed-wetters and masturbators, I can see how they wouldn't like a thinking man's film.

It is a Samurai movie, because there are samurai in it

reply

I rather enjoyed it as well. Rented it, but I will be buying it.

reply

Pacing might be an issue and nice mix of fantasy and samurai but the story was humdrum. Great scenery though.

Its that man again!!

reply

Fantasy movie, yes. Samurai movie, no, not really.

I agree about the scenery. Which did you like best - English woodlands or Hungarian mountains?

reply

I wouldn't call it "great", nevertheless it was more enjoyable than most mainstream movies.
