shareJust watched it. It is boring with underdeveloped characters and relationships. The director fails to connect the plight of the characters with the audience. We wind up really not caring about anything that happens on screen. The special effects are mediocre often hovering into the relm of video game graphics even with the CGI scenery which is the most common use of cgi and is usually flawless in most movies and even on tv. The acting is sub par as well. The mythology the film is based on is a solid starting point but this film does it such a disservice those who enjoy that mythology should be offended.
shareI think it's the audience that fails to connect with an Asian culture.
The CGI is of acceptable levels. Flawless CGI is rare, and certainly never seen on TV. You can't expect Avatar out of every movie.
The only bad actor is Keanu and even he is far from the worst actor in the world. Just as in the Matrix trilogy, his acting is not enough to ruin a movie. No one else delivered any lines that were cringe worthy, so I don't know why you think the acting was subpar.
This movie seemed great comparatively to Asian cinema, which is clearly not what westerners are into. Westerners just don't understand how a simple nod can convey a great deal of respect and comfort.
What Asian culture? I didn't see any.
shareIn short the movie got a lot of backlash because people thought it was disrespectful to old Japanese culture, also people seem to dislike it because Keanu Reeves is in the starring role. But what the critics failed to see is that this is a fantasy movie set in Japan, not a cultural accurate flick. Yes, Keanu isn't the strongest actor, but these are the kind of movie parts he is good in.
I actually didn't watch this movie until this week because of all the negativity, but I've seen it and I liked it... a solid 7 in my book. It could've been an 8 if they payed just a little more attention to story and character development, but the CGI and the action is great and overall it's an entertaining movie.
In my opinion the movie was about 30 minutes too long. If the director wasn't going to develop his characters such that the audience would empathize with them, then at least do us a favor and keep the movie short. Unfortunately, he didn't do either thing. His characters were shallow AND the movie was long.
shareI am bored 20 minutes in...doesn't look like I will make it much further.
sharenot a bad movie i thought it were, just watched
