Saville was pretty hammy.

They guy somehow cultivated an image of being a national treasure. An establishment figure. Back when there was only two or three TV stations. And a handful of radio stations. The fact that he was outrageous and outlandish helped him hide in plain sight.

it could have been more a matter of the BBC being desperate to appeal to under 30's - the BBC was his 'conduit' wasn't it
