Too many twists

John is a bank robber who is an evil thug who is actually a good guy doing the right thing who is actually being duped

Warwick is sheepish guy who is actually crazy and sees people and kills guests who is actually a cop who never kills people but only uses make up who is actually trying to get money...

the girlfriend is a bank teller who is actually sick and dying who is actually duping her boyfriend into robbing the bank.

The film is too disjointed and busy trying to misdirect to be an A film. i appreciate the thought but it loses the ability to make you care for any of the characters.

I agree. I watched it last night and it's just sheepishly unrealistic......I was under the impression "indie films" contribute realism and raw human emotions.....this was quite the opposite. Bad script with decent acting I suppose.

I had just the opposite opinion. Here's how I see things unfolding.

1. he's a cop. one that has been in the force for quite some time. he has power.

2. he has some form of schizophrenia. i would imagine that he lost a wife/girlfriend named Julia at some point in his life. we don't know why or how Julia plays a role in his life, but it doesn't matter.

3. he is not a killer. he has a bag of makeup. he drugs his "victims" and pretends to kill them. that's his thing.

4. the other victim is probably scared sh!tless to come forward about the whole thing. see #1

5. the cheeky antics the whole movie is surrounded by IS the whole point of the movie. i mean how many other "good" movies have odd coincidences? the odd coincidence here is that the bank robber met a psycho who happens to be a cop that is looking for him and that pyscho only pretends to kill people.

of course this is my take on it. the film started slow for me but got more interesting as the end drew near.

I like your take on it.. as they say, life is a million times 'stranger' than fiction.. as such, I didn't find any of the 'coincidences' in the movie to be outlandishly improbable.. it was all cleverly done..

it wasn't the fall from her 16th-floor penthouse that killed her, it was the landing

The twists did get a little out of hand, but I'd say the detective's attitude/actions at the end were a forced final irony. Really, really hard to believe a sane person would fall into that little trap of his with so much evidence let alone a detective of all people. It may have been for the best if the film ended cryptically with John waking up from his ordeal by the trashcans and what not and limping down the road. Same goes for the extended opening- should have started when he got to the house, but then again, both the ending and beginning we have now did produce some good scenes- more a pacing/atmosphere gripe. Anyways, /END RANT...entertaining movie all the way through.

I would definitely have preferred it as a straight "victim turning the tables" type of movie, ala Hard Candy.
The twists made it more original, but were a little too far fetched to ultimately gel as a whole. The third act really fell apart because of it, imo.
The two main actors' performances alone were a joy to watch though, especially David Hyde Pierce's.

It's strictly a matter of taste, of course, but I forgive this movie its twists because I view it as a black comedy. The twists just add to the goofiness.

In contrast, "Hard Candy" to me is more of a "straight" psychological thriller.

I think it's a new genre. I put in the yet-to-be-named genre that "The Tall Man" belongs to.

They should have just ended it when the criminal ended up in the trash can. And while they were at it, why not throw a copy of this film in there too.

"indie films" (I think) just means independent of the studios, not a particular point of view the same all across the board.
As far as twists and realism, lots of movies that you might like aren't very realistic, how about The Silence of the Lambs, or Pulp Fiction, or a hundred more. How dull if they were all realistic---especially comedies!
Twists? do you really want to predict where a movie is going all the time?
Personally, a film is successful for me if it entertains me or makes me think or both. This movie entertained me. That's enough.
Love,
Marianne
