Why wouldnt John have written a full letter to the Detective?

If john really wanted to bring the corrupt Lt. down I don't think he'd have just sent a single Polaroid.

since he was safely in Mexico there wasn't any reason not to tell his entire story.

Also letting the detective know the lt. had all the rest of the money would have been a useful tip. They could check his bank to see if a mysterious large amount of money suddenly appeared in his account.

Of course how did John know who the detective on the case even was? If he called the Police Department would they tell him that information? Couldn't there have been more than one detective in the L.A. Police Department working that case?

I think he just wanted to put Warwick in the sh*t and let him try and weasel out of it

Maybe it was reported on the news of who arrested his girlfriend in the parking lot?

But i think it was Warwick who sent the photo to his cop friend. I think he wanted to have a real dinner party and actually kill someone.

This never occurred to me.

They don't actually show John acquiring the photo, do they? It's implied that he's going to take it when he sees it on the couch, but is he shown with it after the fact?

Maybe it was mailed by an imaginary version of John (i.e. Warwick pretending to be John).

The post mark was from Mexico...

And the letter from Jullia was from Australia...

Both theories have some merit to them. Warwick seemed surprise at the end, but considering his mental state, it might be due to his condition.

Yes, they do. At 44:49 minutes John scoots over on the couch and grabs the photo behind him, then he shoves it down his pants (or into his back pocket) when Warwick goes off to get him the blue drink before the line dance.

So it was intended to have come from John in Mexico.

He knew who Morton was because, when Warwick had him stopped in the parking garage, Warwick addresses the detective as "Morton" over the walkie talkie.

If John had tried to tell the true story, who would believe him? But you give a good detective a thread, and he'll follow it to the truth.
