Really clones?

Do we really know they are clones? I have not read the book, but didn't see it as a given in the movie. I know they went looking for Ruth's possible, but still?? I mean, who are their organs for? Anyone paying for it? Or like in "The Island"; only for their possible? If only for the possible, it could take forever before they would need the organs, right? How come they all are harvested in their early adulthood then? Please forgive me if this is obvious without me seeing it...

The book makes it clear that they are clones. Although the word "clone" isn't actually used until Kathy and Tommy go to the house where Miss Emily was living with the woman from the art gallery.

A clone's organs are donated to anyone who needs them, not to the person the clone was copied from. An organ would be taken from early adulthood because that is when it is at its peak performance, and given to an ailing recipient, perhaps somebody in their fifties who wants to live a bit longer. In the introduction at the start of the film, it was said that by 1967 life expectancy had risen to 100 years.
