Question If You've Seen The Movie (spoilers)

So I'm having a bit of an argument with a friend. In the movie while they were kids Kathy liked Tommy and Ruth was always mean to him. There was always a bit of a connection between Kathy and Tommy, but they were never in a relationship. So Tommy starts dating Ruth and my friend is all "wow, Tommy *beep* cheated on Kathy and Ruth is a *beep* home wrecker." But seriously, do you guys think that's cheating?

Though Kathy and Tommy had a bond in school, neither of them made a move to start a relationship. So no, Tommy wasn't cheating when he started going out with Ruth.

Tommy seemed to be the kind of person who was easily led, so he just went along with Ruth. (Is it true that girls tease the boys they like, as Kathy said?) Kathy could have been more proactive, but was probably just as shy as Tommy was. So Ruth got there first. No one cheated on anybody.
