The film has good production values, a fine soundtrack and cinematography, but I was clearly wrong in thinking it had been put together for a lot less than it clearly was.
It's such a low key, non-demonstrative film that the relatively high budget did surprise me and IMO contributed to a film of this nature, being a commercial failure.
You answered your own question when you mentioned the word "salaries". Making a film is always expensive, requiring the input of a lot of people. The amount of work involved can be staggering. In addition to soundtrack and cinematography, money also had to go towards:

To the viewers watching the film, the credits is just a long list of names, but it all adds up.
I read the novel of Never Let Me Go but I never saw the film when it was on at the cinema. I believe it only had a limited release. (Same with The Road.) It wasn't as heavily hyped as something like, say, Jurassic Park or Independence Day.
I don't often go to the cinema, I'm one of those people who just waits for the DVD to come out. I think the film of Never Let Me Go did justice to the source material. Kazuo Ishiguro seemed happy with it. So on that level it worked. How much money it made at the box office isn't really that important.
"Bravely stated, seeing you're not one of the producers."
I better rephrase:
How much money it made at the box office isn't really that important TO ME AS A VIEWER. I liked the book, the film worked well enough as an adaptation.
Film making is always a risky venture. Film viewing is always a subjective experience.
It's the same with music. I'll listen to a certain type of music because I like it, not because of how many albums the band is selling.
How much money it made at the box office isn't really that important TO ME AS A VIEWER.
Well not to plenty of people, myself included.
The point I was making in the original post, which I still subscribe to, despite your pasting of the film's credit list, is that this film's budget appears surprisingly large, for the type of film it is and arguably the return expected. It looked like plenty of independent films (with similar credit lists) I've seen made on much lower budgets where a $6 million return would see every one back in the black and happy.
I suppose the top 3 stars salaries may have been contributing factors.🐭 reply share
