Question re bumper crops
Really enjoyed the film but was a little confused by the crappy toys and junk that got the cloned kids so excited?

shareWhen I was little I gave away some toys I didn't want anymore. I don't know where they went exactly, only that I was giving them to "the poor people". Why throw something away when you could give it to someone else who might get enjoyment from it?
Donating old toys and trinkets to Hailsham is basically the same as donating to an orphanage. Come to think of it, the clones at Hailsham ARE orphans, in that they don't have parents. At Hailsham they have these Sales every month, where the clones can buy and exchange things with the tokens they accumulated. On this particular occasion there was a "bumper crop", i.e. a good haul. Who wouldn't be excited?
Right that makes sense thanks!
shareThen why isn't Kathy excited? Does she see it as the junk it is? Or is there a deeper reason?
sharethey were somehow 'programmed' to be docile and delighted with junk, whereas normal kids would maybe have questioned the quality of what they were given.
